The primary function of the IAF is to maintain a single worldwide programme of conformity assessment, which reduces risk for business and its customers by assuring them that accredited certificates can be relied upon.

It has established a multilateral recognition agreement (MLA) between its accreditation body members, which facilitates trade and reduces risk to business and its customers. Thereby ensuring an accredited certificate may be trusted anywhere in the world.

The objective of the MLA is to cover all accreditation bodies in all countries around the world, so eliminating the need for suppliers of products or services to be certified in each country where they sell their goods.

Under system certification whole organization is audited by respective standard (e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001) but products are not tested in notified laboratory, so system mark (e.g. ISO 9001) can’t be put on product.

In product certification products are tested in notified laboratory so product certification mark (e.g. CE Mark, ISI Mark) can be put on product.

CE Marking is mandatory for the offerings to be placed in European Union market. CE (Conformité Européenne) directive complies essentially with health, safety and environment requirements and is independent of product quality requirements.
